Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 172 countries and territories worldwide.

Earth Hour started in one of the world’s brightest and busiest cities - Sydney, Australia. 2.2 million people switched off their lights to raise awareness about the impact of climate change. The rest, is history.

The word had spread. 34 more countries encompassing 371 cities participated in Earth Hour. It was fast becoming a movement in just 2 years.

Earth Hour comes to India!

5 million people across 58 cities in India celebrated Earth Hour. Aamir Khan was the first Earth Hour brand ambassador for Earth Hour India. Globally, the number increased to 88 countries and 4,000 cities!

Earth Hour sweeps across India!

128 cities across the India joined the Earth Hour campaign with over 7 million people pledging to switchoff! Abhishek Bachchan became a leader in the movement.Globally, 128 countries came together for the hour.

Going beyond the hour

Earth Hour grew with 130 cities in India and 135 countries globally committing towards a sustainable lifestyle. Prominent buildings and monuments including India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhawan switchedoff their lights. Vidya Balan joined the celebrations in Delhi!

"I Will If You Will”

The call to action for Earth Hour 2012 asked participants in 7001 cities and towns across 152 countries to take on simple actions and inspire millions towards sustainable living. The collaboration with YouTube led to massive participation across the globe. Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar endorsed the campaign.

Switch Off and Switch On to Renewables

The movement continued to spread, with India recording a participation of more than 10 million people across 150 cities. New Delhi became the Earth Hour National capital and ranked among top 6 in the Earth hour City Challenge. 7 State Chief Ministers also appealed to citizens to switch off.

The call to action to switch to a more sustainable lifestyle by adopting renewable energy. The year saw many Earth Hour firsts, including the creation of new platforms for funding and the launch of apps to make eco-friendly choices.

India Unplugged

The campaign reached 4.1 million people in India and millions more globally. The Sahasra Jyoti campaign for the Sundarbans was also launched, enabling clean energy access to over 1,000 households in the region. Over 800 youngsters in Delhi and NCR signed up as volunteers to build awareness on renewable energy.

The campaign reached 178 countries and territories,with 9 countries aiming for policy change. In India, solar energy as a viable source of renewable energy was the focus. People were asked to“Switch Off and Watch the Match in the Dark’, urging communities to come together and support sustainability

187 countries and territories took part with 30 countries witnessing the #EARTHHOUR TREND. In India the campaign reached 30 million people, asking them to be heroes by adoptingfive simple eco-friendly actions. An Earth Hour game was launched, which was about defeating the energy-absorbing monster called Powertron.
